St. John Vianney Catholic School welcomed Rachel’s Challenge to our school on January 9, 2018. This national non-profit organization seeks to spread the message and challenge of Rachel Scott, the first person killed at Columbine High School in 1999. A presenter for Rachel’s Challenge met with students in Kindergarten through 5th grade, and then with students in 6th through 8th grade, to discuss Rachel Scott and her challenge to show more kindness and compassion in our schools and in our world. The elementary presentation was upbeat and positive, only presenting Rachel as a girl who wanted to spread kindness in her school, and shared 5 challenges with the students for acting more compassionately. The middle school presentation shared the story of Rachel Scott, and also challenged the students to follow Rachel’s mission of kindness. After the presentations, students were encouraged to sign a banner accepting Rachel’s Challenge, and the banner is now hung prominently in our school entryway. In the afternoon, students in 6th through 8th grade received training on starting a “Friends of Rachel” Club, with ideas on how the students can spread kindness and compassion throughout our school and community. The next day these students met and started working on a variety of projects that will foster an environment of kindness and compassion, not only at SJV, but in the Gallatin community as well. Rachel’s Challenge includes an ongoing curriculum for teachers to continue the message consistently throughout the school year. Our presenter also gave a special presentation after school to share the message of Rachel’s Challenge with SJV parents. In a world where many students struggle with issues of bullying, isolation, and depression, we are excited to bring Rachel’s Challenge to St. John Vianney, and work proactively with our teachers and students to prevent things like this from happening. Pictures include our elementary students with their Rachel’s Challenge presenter, Meichelle Gibson, as well as students signing our Rachel’s Challenge banner.
