Language Arts Update (6th-8th) – October 24-28

This week, students will continue looking at pronouns and how they are used.

pronoun-cilpartWe will continue practicing how to paraphrase – and will turn this practice into a paragraph!  We will also start learning how to summarize and will incorporate summarized information as well as directly quoted information into paragraphs.  We will finish up our expository essays by learning to write a concluding paragraph.  We plan to have our FINAL essays done around the middle of next week.

Students will also begin their first “in-class” group reading.  Eighth grade will begin with The Outsiders, seventh grade will begin with Matched, and sixth grade will read Flipped.  Students will learn to recognize setting, will identify the elements of plot, and will look at tone and mood.  They will also learn vocabulary associated with the readings and answer comprehension questions.  There will be various writings and activities with each reading.

Students will begin Unit 5 Vocabulary – they should be working nightly on online activities – and they have the opportunity for extra credit!

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

pronoun-clipartWe are finally done with VERBS!  We will test tomorrow (Tuesday) over Unit 3 in grammar and will jump immediately into Unit 4 – Pronouns.  Our study of pronouns will include:  Personal pronouns (and determining whether they are subject or object pronouns), antecedents, possessive pronouns, indefinite pronouns, reflexive pronouns, intensive pronouns, interrogative and demonstrative pronouns.

We are continuing Unit 4 in Vocabulary.  Students are a little over half-way done with the unit and will test any day after they complete Assignment 8.  Students should be working nightly on assignments and have the opportunity each night to complete extra credit.

Students are completing peer edits on their expository essay introductory paragraphs.  We are taking this essay step-by-step so students will be very prepared for other formal writing assignments.

Students should have their third independent reading books, and they should be selecting their upcoming projects.  Independent Reading project #3 will be due on Friday, November 18th.

verb-picThis week we will continue our study on verbs- focusing primarily on verb forms and tenses.  Expect a test in the next few weeks.

We will begin Unit 4 in Vocabulary.  Students will be responsible for completing assigned homework on a NIGHTLY basis for this unit.  Grades will be given on scored exercises.

We will also continue writing our expository essay.  Students are answering the following prompt:  Using the twelve genres we read in class, explain how one theme can be present in different genres of writing.  Students will write each paragraph of a 5-paragraph essay separately- incorporating citations into their paragraphs.  Students will also learn to paraphrase, summarize, and quote directly while writing these paragraphs.

Language Arts Update (6th-8th) – September 26th – 30th

This week we will continue our unit on verbs.  Students will be focusing on linking verbs, predicate adjective and predicate nouns.  We will also start looking at verb tenses.  Students should have their “blue notes” completed on this chapter, and may begin studying those notes.

We will also continue working on Unit 3 Vocabulary words.  Students may log on each night to spellingcity.com to complete assigned activities.  They may also complete extra credit in their workbooks.

We will begin the process of writing an expository essay.  Students will write each paragraph separately – starting with the introductory paragraph.  They will write using transitions and will understand topics, attention grabbers, and thesis statements.

If you have questions, feel free to contact me.

Language Arts Update (6th – 8th) September 19-23

This week we will begin our study of verbs.  Our verb unit is usually the longest grammar unit of the year, so don’t be expecting a test any time soon.  We will cover action/linking verbs, direct and indirect objects, transitive and intransitive verbs, predicate adjectives and predicate nouns, linking verbs, main verbs, verb tenses, principal parts of verbs, verb forms, and irregular verbs.  I’m assuming you can see how this unit takes some time.

We will also begin Unit 3 in Vocabulary- be sure your child is working nightly on spellingcity.com.  There is EXTRA CREDIT available just about every single night.

In Literature, we will start taking our research on theme and begin turning it into an expository essay.  Students will learn how to summarize, paraphrase, and cite sources correctly.

If you have questions, feel free to contact me.
