Grade 3: Two Weeks at a Glance – February 30 – March 10

Testing

No Homework All Week!!!!

Enjoy two weeks of homework free evenings! Please remember to have your child go to bed on time and to eat a healthy breakfast. Also, please make sure to make an extra effort to make the mornings happy. The students should know to do their personal best, but not to get stressed.  They are all prepared and I know they will do a great job. If you would like to send extra snacks for students, please send something healthy. Please do not send anything with peanuts.

In the afternoons we will be working on fun, educational activities. We will read the book Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson. We will enjoy discussions, explore what friendship means, and learn to look for God in others.

We will improve our persuasive paragraphs. We will learn how to write  in MLA format, how to double space, what font to use for official papers, how to indent, and how to insert a picture and use word wrap.

We will continue to format our pages for our Twelve Apostles book. The book should be ready for print soon. In addition to this, we will continue to learn about Lent and discover how to make Mass more meaningful.

In Science, the students will work in groups to learn a lesson and then compose  music and write lyrics to teach the concepts to their classmates.

We will play multiplication games, complete challenge activities, and explore math in the world around us.

Our Book Adventure contest will continue through March 9th. My goal is for all of the students to reach 500 points and enjoy a class party. Please help your child meet this goal. Since there is no homework during this time, this is a grade time to read. Remember, students reading goals were set and will count as a test grade.

All of the students should be able to take and pass the test on Indian in the Cupboard. This is the book that Mrs. Murphy read to the students. It is worth 200 Book Adventure points. They will also have the opportunity to take the test on Bridge to Terabithia after we read it in class.

Testing week will end with a trip to the Children’s Theater in Nashville to see Beauty and the Beast. The next week we will  compare and contrast the story in our literature book with the play.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Wise

I’ll Be Attending the NAEA National Convention Next Week!

 From Mrs. Wehby…

The NAEA National Convention is the largest professional development opportunity offered worldwide, exclusively developed art educators. Participating in exemplary professional development workshops and sessions with other pK-12 art educators, museum educators, researchers, scholars and university professors, teaching artists, and administrators offers a unique opportunity to collaborate and learn from other professionals in the field, as well as share our schools successes.  Within the 1,000 concurrent sessions offered at the 2012 NAEA National Convention, there are numerous sessions specically targeted to my professional development goals including strategies for enhancing student achievement, interdisciplinary learning, assessment, curriculum, and instruction.

I can’t wait to bring back all that I will learn  and share it with the students at SJV!

Grade 3: This Week at a Glance Feb. 20-24

Happy Presidents’ Day,  No School on Monday!

Basketball players, don’t forget Team Spirit Tuesday. Please wear your jersey, jeans, white tennis shoes, and white socks.

Religion: Chapter 21: This week we continue to talk about the Mass. We will discuss how to participate more fully in the Mass through our responses, our song, and our prayers. We will also learn the names of the various vessels and objects used in the Church and at Mass. Two students made an Animoto on sacramentals for the other students to view.

Social Studies: Take home kits will come home this week! Finally this is TRUE. I found all of the parts I needed. Hooray!!!

Grammar:   The students typed their persuasive writing papers. Now, we will work on making them even better.

Multiplication: We will take our timed test on the six facts on Tuesday. This week the students will learn the eight facts. Daily timed practice tests will be sent home on Monday. Please have your child work on speed and accuracy at home. The completed timed-test page is due the following Monday. Please record the time for each column.

Math:  We will continue  learn about parallel lines, intersecting lines, rays, line segments, and points. We will also learn about geometric shapes and what congruent means. I will continue to work with small groups of students to teach them how to multiply  2 and 3 digit numbers by a one digit number. Some students will move on to the challenge of multiplying two digits by two digits. Some students are very excited about this. I cannot stress the importance of knowing the multiplication facts enough. Math Assessment 20 will be given on Wednesday.

Science: This week we will mine for minerals – at least we will mine for cancy pieces in cookies! We will learn where most of Earth’s resources are located, what renewable, reuseable, and nonrenewable mean, and we will give examples of resources that fall in each category. The students will discuss why it is important to take care of the Earth and what they can do to help.

Reading and Spelling:  This week we will read “Earth: Our Planet in Space.” The students will not have an assessment on this story. The information will be used to prepare for our upcoming science project.

Spelling:  This week we will work on the 100 most used words in the English language. The students will take a pretest and then work on the words that they missed. There is a video clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oDhRx9_5Nk  This link may be helpful for students who prefer to see the words. The video is by no means exciting, but it does provide the pronunciation and shows the word spelled correctly. We will try some new techniques to help the students learn and retain the words.

Book Adventure:  The new contest has begun!  As always, students earning 500 points or more will enjoy a PJ and popcorn party. The top three readers will also receive individual prizes. The contest name is “We Need to Read” and the code is WD311. Please remember that meeting reading goals is a test grade for this quarter.

We will continue to take comprehension quizzes. These quizzes are on passages that the students have not seen before, but are written at a third grade level. The quizzes are being recorded as classwork grades and will count as 30% of your child’s grade. Please encourage your child to read carefully, look back in the story for answers, eliminate erroneous answers, and to read all of the choices before selecting an answer.

Grades K-3: Pope John Paul II Students Visit SJV

Several students from Pope John Paul II came to visit the SJV K-3 students. The JPII students wrote and illustrated versions of classic fairy tales in French. They brought their books and read them to the SJV students. Everyone had a great time.
