This Week in 2nd Grade

Reading: This week’s selection is “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” a version of the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Vocabulary words are finest, leather, flash, shoemaker, and elves. Test is on Friday.

Spelling: Test is on Friday.

Language Arts: We will be identifying subjects and predicates in sentences.

Math: We are using related addition and subtraction facts to write fact families.

Religion: Today we went outside to write prayers thanking God for His Creation. We will also be learning about Adam and Eve this week.


Social Studies: This week we are finishing Unit 1: Communities. Test over the unit will be on Thursday. Words to know are: community, museum, urban, rural, suburban, transportation, communication, laws, and citizen.

Reading: This week we are reading “For the Love of Our Earth,” a rhyming fiction poem about how to show kindness to the earth and to each other. Vocabulary words are engines, witness, glows, dawn, and litter. Test will be on Friday.

Spelling: Test on Friday.

Language Arts: We are learning about subjects and predicates this week.

Math: We are continuing to practice addition facts as well writing fact families.

Religion: This week’s topic is God the Creator. We will be discussing the creation of Earth and man.

Social Studies: We are still learning all about communities. This week we will learn about how communities have changed over time and how to be good citizens.

Reading: We started our first unit in the textbook this week. The theme of the unit is Kindness. Our first story is Because of You. A test over the story will be given on Friday. This first test will not count as a test grade. I will grade it like a normal test; however, it will be used as practice so that students can see what a second grade reading test is like. Next week’s test will be taken for a grade.

Spelling: Test on Friday

Language: We are reviewing the four types of sentences: statement, question, command, exclamation. A quiz over these will be given on Wednesday.

Math: We are learning how to add 3 or more addends and will begin working on subtraction this week.

Religion: We are finishing up the first two chapters on God and the Blessed Trinity. A test will be given on Thursday.

Social Studies: This week we are learning about communities and the three main kinds of communities: rural, urban, and suburban. We will also be comparing communities of the past to those we live in today.

Reading: We are reviewing more vowel sounds and spellings this week. We will also start Workshop. This is a time for small group learning and practicing of skills. Students will take a Benchmark Assessment on Friday to assess where they are at in reading.

Spelling: Coming next week!

Language: This week we are learning about the four kinds of sentences: statement, question, command, and exclamation.

Math: We are continuing to practice addition facts and learn strategies to add quicker.

Religion: Our topic for the week is the Holy Trinity.

Science: We are discussing what happened during the solar eclipse.

Social Studies: This week we will begin learning about communities.

This Week in 2nd Grade

We had a great first two days of school last week! We learned the rules, classroom procedures, and about each other. Please check this webpage weekly for information on what is happening in the classroom and at SJV.

Reading: We are starting off the year by reviewing short vowel sounds and spellings as well as r-controlled vowels (or, ir, er, ur, and ar). We are also learning to summarize and compare versions of well known fairy tales.

Language: We have already begun writing in our Journals and will continue to do so throughout the year. This week we will review the different kinds of sentences.

Spelling: Coming soon!

Math: We are reviewing and practicing addition facts.

Religion: The first chapter in our book is God the Father. We will be discussing God’s role as our Father and the special gifts he gave us as His children.

Science: At the beginning of the year, we always discuss how to keep ourselves and others safe in school by reviewing safety rules, emergency drills, and how to be a friend not a bully. We will also be discussing the upcoming solar eclipse in preparation for the big event next Monday.
