1st Grade Weekly News 1-23-12

*Please help remind your child that neatness counts when completing homework.  Any homework that is messy will be returned and asked to be re-done.

 

Language Arts: 

We will begin unit 7 in our reading series.  This week we will focus on blending, spelling and reading words with “ow’, “ou” and “kn” sounds.   In our reading books, students will be reading Frog and Toad and discussing the elements of real vs. fantasy.  We will also discuss cause and effect by making a multi- flow map.  Benchmark assessments all week!

High Frequency:

Spelling Words:

Crown, tower, allow, chowder,

Flower, pouch, outside, round, mouse, playground

 

Writing:

Students will learn about a make believe story.  We will use a story map to organize our ideas for a make believe story.  We will also work on writing words in ABC order.

Math:

Continue to work on adding double digits without regrouping, time, money and adding 3 numbers together. There will be a test on Wednesday.

Social Studies:

Unit 3 “Good Citizens”

Science:

Students had a lot of fun learning about penguins and celebrating Penguin Awareness Day (1/20).  There will be a short test over the material on Tuesday.


Religion:

Discuss the teachings and miracles of Jesus.  We will also learn about the 12 Apostles.

 

 

First Grade News Week of 1/17

 

 

Language Arts:

This week we will be reviewing unit 6 in our reading series and taking the end of the unit test on Thursday.

Math:

We will be reviewing doubles plus one facts, adding double digit without regrouping, using centimeters to measure and identifying how many more on a graph.  There will be a math test on Wednesday.

Religion: 

Reviewing chapters 9-12 and take chapter test on Wednesday.

Writing:

We will be reading and writing contractions and taking unit 6 written assessment on Thursday.

Social Studies:

Discussing Martin Luther King and segregation.

Science:

Learning all about penguins.  We will be learning facts about different types of penguins, where they live, and participating in various experiments related to penguins.

Spelling:

review words from unit 5-6

coast, blew, elbow, bright, frighten, snail, railway, crooked, lady, babies

 

Grades 1-4: Health Lessons

Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Krampotich for coming in to teach the students about several health topics including: hand washing, nutrition, communicable and non-communicable diseases, disease prevention, hand-washing, common injuries, safety,  and so much more!  All of the students enjoyed the presentation.

Thank you to all the families who have donated empty plastic gallon jugs. We are nearly one quarter of the way to our 400+ goal. Check out the picture to the left to see what we are going to do with all those milk jugs!
