Middle School Language Arts
The middle school students read a book each month independently, and report on that book to the class. Mrs. Freeman assigns interesting and creative ways for them to share the books known as "Book Talks". In addition to the "Book Talk", students also submit a written reflection about each book they read. In the "Book Talk" they want to interest the other students in reading the book so they may not want to give away the ending. However, they need to show that they read the entire book so the written report allows their teacher to assess their understanding of the entire book. Each month students share the books in different ways. They have had a lot of fun with these projects this year! Click here for photos of puppet shows.
Some other "Book Talk" projects:
●"Tale in a Tube" - students select items to put in a tube and then decorate the outside of the tube. As they take out the items they explain how it connects to the story.
●Diorama - scene in a shoebox
●Poster - show characters, setting, and plot graph on a poster
●T.V. commercial of coming attractions - as if the book was being made into a movie. (January)
●Author's Forum - dress as the author and discuss the novel from the author's point of view
●Mobile - same idea as the tale in a tube - but hanging from the ceiling (April)
●Storyboard - scenes in storyboard fashion to share main events (May).
