Language Arts Update – Feb. 17-21

Grammar –Students will continue a unit on pronouns.  We will discuss personal pronouns, subject and object pronouns, pronouns and antecedents (and making them agree), possessive and indefinite pronouns, reflexive and intensive pronouns, and interrogative and demonstrative pronouns.  This will be a two week study with a comprehensive test following – all test dates will be published, written in agendas, and posted on the testing calendar in the middle school hallway.    Eighth grade will test on Wednesday, February 26th and Seventh grade will test on Thursday, February 27th


Independent Reading –    Students will turn in Reading Goal 2 on Friday, February 21st.  Other assignment dates are as follows: Reading Goal 3 is due on Friday, February 28th,;Reading Goal 4 is due on Friday, March 7th; End of Book Form, Option 1 or 2, and Introductory Book Form is due on Thursday, March 13th.


Group Reading – novel –Students are continuing their second group reading.  Eighth grade students have started reading Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys.  They are continuing their study of the Holocuast.  Sixth grade has started reading Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool.  Seventh grade students are exploring symbolism in Lord of the Flies.     


Group Reading – Scholastic – Students are finishing their current Scholastic magazine this week.  This magazine allows students to read various articles of narrative non-fiction, drama, argument essays and paired texts (informational text and folk tales).  Students will complete comprehension questions on articles read and will also cover how to maintain verb tense consistency, how to vary sentence structure, how to eliminate ramblers and run-ons, and how to distinguish between the easily confused words you’re/your and number/amount.  Sixth, Seventh and Eight graders will test over Scholastic material from the November – January issues on Tuesday, February 25th.


Writing – Students will look at the elements of dramatic writing, and they will create their own One Act play using these elements.   Term paper information will be coming home soon!


Journals – In addition to writing journals, students are using journal time to review grammar concepts, complete short reading comprehension quizzes, and work on subject and verb agreement.


Vocabulary – Students will continue Unit 7 and will complete exercises where students will write definitions, complete sentences, identify synonyms and antonyms, select the correct word from various options, and use the vocabulary in context. 


Idiom of the Week – One student per week is drawn to create a “literal idiom”.  This week’s student is  Ashlyn Roberts.  Idiom dictionaries are available in my room if students need ideas.
