News for the week of January 15 – January 21, 2014

Letter from the Principal

Dear SJV Families:

Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching!  For those of you who do not know, Catholic Schools Week is a national “celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2014 is January 26 to February 1. Schools typically observe National Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open house and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.”

SJV will celebrate the week with the following events:

January 25 – Chili Cookoff @ 5:30 pm

January 27 – Student Appreciation Day (Out of Uniform Day for Students)

January 28 – St. John Vianney Day

January 29 – Parent Appreciation Day & Bishop’s All School’s Mass @ Cathedral

January 30 – Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day

January 31 – Grandparents’ Day (RSVP form going home today – due on January 22)

We are excited to celebrate with other Catholic schools across the nation!

Have a great week!

Jennifer McCormick

HAVE YOU RE-REGISTERED YET?  Re-registration for the 2014-2015 school year began on 1/9.  All Registration and Subsidy information was sent home in your child’s Wednesday folder last week.   If you plan on getting the early bird rate of $50 dollars, your paperwork and payment need to be submitted by January 24th.  Fees go up to $100 on January 27th, so don’t delay!

SJV WILDCATS ARE HOSTING A BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT THIS SATURDAY IN THE GYM. Come and  show-off your Wildcat spirit and watch our 3rd & 4th grade boys take on Christ the King School at 9 am!  Haven’t gotten enough of your Wildcats?  Our 7th & 8th grade boys will be taking on St. Bernard in their gym at 2:15, and our 7th & 8th grade girls will be taking on St. Pius in their gym at 10:15 Saturday.  Hope to see you all there!

Looking to earn some volunteer hours?  Our concession stand is in need of coffee, small Styrofoam coffee cups, hot dogs and buns, small bags of plain chips, and cereal and/or granola bars (no peanut please!).  Remember – Every $10 spent on donations will earn 1 volunteer hour for your family!

THE SJV ACOUSTIC EVENING AND SILENT AUCTION-  featuring Eddy Raven, Frank Myers, Billy Montana, Jimmy Nichols, and Danny Wells is scheduled for Saturday, February 15th at 6:30 in the social hall.  Event Fliers and Tickets available in the school and church office.

CLASS PROJECTS FOR AUCTION:  Due to the postponement of the annual Gala, the teachers will be working on the annual class projects for the upcoming Acoustic Evening on February 15.  You may be receiving information from your child’s homeroom teacher regarding requests for volunteers to help and/or supplies or monetary donations to complete the projects.  We ask that you please be as generous as you are able in assisting with and/or supporting the auction of these projects as this will be the primary source of funds available for tuition assistance for the 2014-2015 school year.  Thank you, as always, for sharing of your time, talent, and treasure to support SJV students.

VOLUNTEERS FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK NEEDED:  Planning has begun for our annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week, January 27 – 31, 2014.  Thursday, January 30 will be designated as “SJV Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day.”  We are looking for volunteers to organize and help with a Faculty-Staff Appreciation Breakfast (SEE CIA NEWS SECTION FOR MORE INFORMATION) on this day.

If you can’t show your appreciation by helping with the breakfast, but still want to do something small for a member of the faculty/staff, you will find a short “favorite things” list for each member of the faculty/staff attached to this email.

MASS CHANGES   Due to changes in Father Gideon’s schedule the school Mass schedule has been changed.  We will not be having Mass on Jan. 21st and 23rd.  Father has also added a feast day Mass for students in grades 2 – 8 on February 3rd.   We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Each year our current Pre-K students, as well as any newly enrolled Pre-K and Kindergarten students, take a readiness screening for the coming school year.  This year’s screening is scheduled for Friday, February 21st.  In order for this to be possible, the students in Pre-K and Kindergarten will not have school on that day.

We apologize in advance for the disruption of your normal school schedule.  If you have any questions about the readiness screening or its scheduling, please feel free to contact the school office.

It’s Cook-off time again!  Think you have a winning recipe?  Take down the reigning champions in one of these three categories:  Judge’s Favorite, Crowd Favorite, and Spiciest Chili.  There is also a dessert contest if spicy isn’t your thing!  Remember – You don’t have to enter the competition to be part of the fun.  Bring the family – and your appetites – and enjoy the fun, food (there are hot dogs to go along with that chili), and all the chili you care to try!

FATHER RYAN HIGH SCHOOL will honor longtime teachers Jim and Pat Langdon and their combined 93 years in Catholic education at the school’s 35th Annual Legacy Gala Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the new Omni Hotel in downtown Nashville.

THE LEGACY GALA is an annual event that honors an individual, or individuals, who have made a significant impact on Father Ryan, whether in the classroom, on campus or in the community. This year’s gala includes dinner prepared by award-winning chefs at the Omni, followed by a live and silent auction.
The proceeds from the gala benefit the overall programs at the school, directly impacting the students of Father Ryan.

Father Ryan’s Theology Speaker Series is featuring The Reverend Becca Stevens, author, Episcopal priest and founder of Thistle Farms and Magdalene on Thursday, January 30 at 6:30 pm in the Center for the Arts on Father Ryan’s campus. The Rev. Stevens was named one of 15 Champions of Change by the White House in 2011 and named Social Entrepreneur of the Year and Tennessean of the Year in 2011.
This event is free, open to the public.
