News for the week of January 8 – January 14, 2014

Letter from the Principal:

Dear SJV Families:

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a blessed Christmas and break, and have transitioned easily back to the school routine.  While it may seem like the busy holiday months are over and we can relax a bit now, we actually have quite a bit happening at SJV in the coming weeks.  A few things I would like to draw your attention to include:

  • Re-registration – Yes, it’s already time to begin planning for the 2014-2015 school year!  Please find information for re-registration in your child’s Wednesday folder today, and note the discounted registration rate deadline of January 24.

  • CIA Meeting – I hope that many of you will come to next Monday’s CIA meeting at 6pm in the Spanish/Music room of the school.  This is a wonderful time to get to know parents and teachers, as well as share your ideas and assist with plans to help our school.

  • Acoustic Evening & Silent Auction – Don’t forget that we have a wonderful opportunity to fundraise and have a lovely evening (this is a great Valentine’s Day date night!) on Saturday, February 15.  The last time these talented songwriters joined us, the evening was a sell-out and the entertainment was truly top-notch.  Buy your tickets soon!

Also in today’s Wednesday folder are your child(ren)’s report card(s).  Please review, sign and return them no later than next Wednesday, January 15.  If you have any questions about your child’s grades or academics, please make sure you call or email your child’s teacher as soon as possible.

Thank you for all you do to support SJV!  Have a wonderful week!

Jennifer McCormick

RE-REGISTRATION BEGINS THURSDAY, JANUARY 9TH.  Re-registration for the 2014-2015 school year will begin on 1/9.  All Registration and Subsidy information has been sent home in your child’s Wednesday folder today.   Plan on registering early so that you can take advantage of the early bird rate of $50 dollars.  Fees go up to $100 on January 27, so don’t delay!

SJV WILDCATS ARE HOSTING A BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT THIS SATURDAY IN THE GYM. Come show off your Wildcat Pride and watch our 3rd & 4th grade boys take on St. Henry!  Haven’t gotten enough of your Wildcats?  Our 7th & 8th grade boys will be taking on St. Rose in the St. Pius gym at 12:15 on Saturday, and our 7th & 8th grade girls will be taking on St. Henry in the JP2 main gym at 6:30 on Sunday.

Looking to earn some volunteer hours?  Our concession stand is in need of small bottles of Gatorade, hot dogs and buns, small candies (Air Heads, Laffy Taffy, Ring Pops, etc.) and napkins.  Remember – Every $10 spent on donations will earn 1 volunteer hour for your family!

THE SCHOOL YEAR IS HALF-WAY OVER…..HOW ARE YOU DOING ON YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS?  If you have any questions about how many of your required hours have been logged, please contact the school office via email at and we will send a copy of your family hours log home.  Please remember that families applying for financial aid will not be considered if they have not made satisfactory progress toward completing their volunteer hour commitment.

THE SJV ACOUSTIC EVENING AND SILENT AUCTION  featuring Eddy Raven, Frank Myers, Billy Montana, Jimmy Nichols, and Danny Wells is scheduled for Saturday, February 15th at 6:30 in the social hall.  Check out your child’s Wednesday folder for event and ticket information.

CLASS PROJECTS FOR AUCTION:  Due to the postponement of the annual Gala, the teachers will be working on the annual class projects for the upcoming Acoustic Evening on February 15.  You may be receiving information from your child’s homeroom teacher regarding requests for volunteers to help and/or supply or monetary donations to complete the projects.  We ask that you please be as generous as you are able in assisting with and/or supporting the auction of these projects as this will be the primary source of funds available for tuition assistance for the 2014-2015 school year.  Thank you, as always, for sharing of your time, talent, and treasure to support SJV students.

VOLUNTEERS FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK NEEDED:  Planning has begun for our annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week, January 27 – 31, 2014.  Thursday, January 30 will be designated as “SJV Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day.”  We are looking for volunteers to organize and help with a Faculty-Staff Appreciation Breakfast from 7:30 to 9:00 am on this day.  If you are available to help or donate items for breakfast, please contact Mrs. McCormick.  Thank you!

MASS CHANGES   Due to changes in Father Gideon’s schedule the school Mass schedule has been changed.  We will not be having Mass on Jan. 21st and 23rd.  Father has also added a feast day Mass for students in grades 2 – 8 on February 3rd.   We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
