News for the week of October 30– November 5, 2013

Letter from the Principal:

Dear SJV Families:

I hope you are having a wonderful week!  I found a little story that I thought I would share with you.

Helping hands

A mother, wishing to encourage her son’s progress at the piano, bought tickets to a performance by the great Polish pianist Ignace Paderewski. When the evening arrived, they found their seats near the front of the concert hall and eyed the majestic Steinway waiting on the stage. Soon the mother found a friend to talk to, and the boy slipped away.

At eight o’clock, the lights in the auditorium began to dim, the spotlights came on, and only then did they notice the boy – up on the piano bench, innocently picking out “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” His mother gasped in shock and embarrassment but, before she could retrieve her son, the master himself appeared on the stage and quickly moved to the keyboard.

He whispered gently to the boy, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.” Leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in the bass part. Soon his right arm reached around the other side and improvised a delightful obbligato. Together, the old master and the young novice held the crowd mesmerized with their blended and beautiful music.

In all our lives, we receive helping hands – some we notice, some we don’t. Equally we ourselves have countless opportunities to provide helping hands – sometimes we would like our assistance to be noticed, sometimes we don’t. Little of what we all achieve is without learning from others and without support from others and what we receive we should hand out.

Many thanks to all of you for all of your helping hands – both those we see, and those we don’t.  They are all appreciated!  (Upon doing a little research, there are conflicting reports that this story is actually true, but it is the sentiment that means the most to me.)

Have a blessed week!

Jennifer McCormick

CIA (Community in Action) NEWS:

FUN RUN TEE SHIRT DAY IS tomorrow   Congratulations to Pre-K, K, 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades for meeting their classroom goals of raising at least $50 per student!  These classrooms have receive an out-of-uniform day on October 31 to wear their Fun Run t-shirts, jeans and white tennis shoes.  Because so many students worked hard to raise money for the run, any student that raised at least $50 in pledges in a classroom that didn’t meet the class goal also received the out-of-uniform reward.  Please return your fun-run tee shirt pass to your homeroom teacher in the morning.

THE NOVEMBER CIA MEETING is scheduled for Monday, November 11th from 6 – 7 pm and will be hosted by the 2nd grade.  Please contact your child’s teacher to find out how your class will be participating.  Remember, all families are asked to attend at least 2 of the 10 meetings for the school year, and childcare is provided.  Minutes from the October meeting are attached to this email.
