Look What’s Happening In Kindergarten!

I can’t believe we are heading into our sixth week of school already.  The students will have their first sight word assessment this Friday.  It will be over all 15 words.  Please practice the words daily with your child.  Learning these sight words is an important step in learning to read.  Here’s what’s going on this week.

We will be exploring with apples this week.  I am asking that each child bring in one red apple, one green apple and one yellow apple by Tuesday.  These will be used for activies throughout the week.  Thank you!

MATH –   This week the students will place an object on a real graph, identify fewest and most on a graph, name a shape using three attributes, match a number card to a ste of objects, create and read an AB color pattern, and read and understand a simple recipe.

HANDWRITING – This week we will practice creating the letters S and F.  We will also continue to practice writing names using only one capital letter.

SOCIAL STUDIES – This week we will compare maps and globes, identify features of the globe, and identify physical characteristics of the Earth.

RELIGION – This week we will read the Story of Creation.  We will discuss that God created the world and everything on it.  The students will understand that God is our creator.

READING/LANGUAGE ARTS – This week we will review previous sight words, decode five new sight words, make declarative sentences, sequence story events, recognize and produce rhyming words, attach the /s/ sound to the letter Ss, and the /m/ sound to the letter Mm.  We will develope an understanding for new vocabulary words, locate the title and the names of the author and illustrator, use the Table of Contents, set goals for reading a selection, and take our first sight word assessment on Friday.

THEME – This week we will have an apple theme in the classroom.  We will learn about Johnny Appleseed, identify and name all four seasons, taste test apples and graph our results, sequence story events and have some yummy apple treats.
