News for the week of May 15 – 21, 2013
Letter from the Principal:
Dear SJV Families,
Yesterday was bittersweet as our 8th grade attended All-School Mass for the last time, and passed the Light of Leadership on to our 7th graders. During the ceremony, I said that over the past few months, these students had become a “class with distinction” and those were the words that choked me up the most.
You see, I have the honor and privilege of not only being a principal and Spanish teacher to these students, but I was their third grade teacher as well. I fondly remember seeing them grow and mature over the course of that year, and now, five years later, I see these amazing young men and women, bursting with maturity and intelligence and enthusiasm for what awaits them beyond the doors of SJV.
Yesterday I also had a moment of déjà-vu as I sat with them in the church as they went to Confession in preparation for tonight’s Confirmation, and I remembered the sweet innocence they had the first time we went as a third grade class. Most had not been since the spring of their First Holy Communion, and were worried that they had forgotten what to say or do, and that Father would be upset. I remember encouraging them and practicing with them, and their excitement when they emerged from the Confessional. Yesterday they were so confident and mature, and I couldn’t help but shed a few tears of pride.
I remember in third grade, I would sometimes cry with pride for them at Mass when they carried up the gifts or read the intentions, and many of them would tease me and laugh. I hope that if they see me cry this evening and in the days ahead, they understand how very proud I am of them, as we all are, and that I cannot wait to see where they go from here.
Please pray for our 8th graders as they are confirmed this evening, celebrate graduation at Mass on Friday evening, and venture off away from home on the 8th grade class trip to Washington DC next week. I wish to thank our 8th graders and their families for their many contributions to SJV over the years. You will be missed, but you will always be family, and I hope you will return to share all the wonderful things you experience in the future.
