Grade 3: This Week at a Glance – March 11 – 15
All School Mass is on Tuesday this week.
Spring pictures will be taken on Wednesday.
RELIGION: This week we will learn about Jesus’ public ministry and the miracles that he performed. The students will take the Comprehensive Religion Assessment for the Diocese in April. READING: We will continue to learn about story telling and writing. The test on Tomas and the Library Lady will be this Friday, March 15. We will continue reading Bridge to Terabithia by by Katherine Paterson. When we finish the book, we will discuss several topics including being different, surrounding ourselves with good people, being confident in who we are, grieving, and death.
SPELLING: The words in this unit contain words that fit patterns that we have studied earlier in the year. This week’s words review long vowel sounds, consonant blends, compound words, realated words, and contractions. This words are: strange, concert, peanut, washcloth, mute, these, wrap, didn’t, pupil, limb, jacket, scarf, orphan, knuckle, and you’re.
LANGUAGE ARTS: This week the students will continue to learn about adjectives and adverbs. The students will also learn how to use commas after yes, no, and after someone’s name in a direct address. Our writing focus will be on using a thesaurus and creating a story with a beginning, middle, and end. A weekly grammar test is given each Wednesday.
MATH: Our focus this week will be on division. The students will learn that division is repeated subtraction and that items are shared equally. The students will watch videos, write number sentences, and draw pictures to learn division concepts. The students will continue to work on mastering their multiplication facts. 100 fact sheets will be sent home daily. The goal is for the students to complete the sheet with 100% accuracy in less than five minutes. 100 fact multiplication timed tests will be given on Fridays, these tests will count as a classwork grade. Weekly math assessments are given on Wednesdays.
SCIENCE: This week we will begin our unit on energy. Please watch your child’s agenda for assignments and other information. Our field trip to the Discovery Center will be on Monday, March 18. No tests are scheduled at this time.
SOCIAL STUDIES: We have two mayoral candidates. Our candidates will begin to campaign on Monday. We will vote for Mayor on Friday. This week, we will make our wallets and design our class money. Each student will need to provide proof of citizenship to get their identification card. Then, the students will fill out voters’ registration card. Students will need their ID and voters’ card to vote on Friday. The students will recieve a copy of the various mini-society jobs and a job application on Monday. All applications are due on Wednesday. All aspects of mini-society are graded. In addition to the social studies grade for economics, the students will earn a grade in Religion (being good citizens, sportsmanship, being fair, honest, hard-working, etc.), Grammar (filling out applications, writing newspaper ads, writing letters and postcards, addressing mail), and Math (writing checks, making a budget, balancing accounts, completing deposit slips, writing receipts).
In order for mini-society to be successful, we will need several things: old cards, new or gently used items for the store, and parent volunteers to help with the bank on April 8th from 12:45 – 2:45 and on April 9th from 12:45 – 1:25.
TECHNOLOGY: We are almost done with our class book. The students are doing a great job.
LIBRARY: Our last Book Adventure contest for the year has begun. Please make sure your child is registered.
