First Grade Weekly News 3/4/13

We are finally done with our Iowa testing!  Students will only need to bring one snack for the rest of the week.  Homework and spelling will resume next week.

** The middle school will be having a spelling bee on Friday.  We will be having our own spelling bee in class on Wednesday.  I will be testing the students on old spelling words taught thus far.  The winners will be announced on Friday at the middle school spelling bee**

Language Arts:

This week we will be reading various books by Dr. Suess.  Many of his books can be used to teach a lesson or moral.  In the Lorax we learn about the environment,  in the Foot Book, we learned about antonyms and from the Cat in the Hat we discussed responsibility   This week we will be reading Oh say can you say and Fox in Socks, and discuss what a tongue twister is.  Students will be writing their own alliterations.  We will also read Horton Hatches the Egg and Horton Hears a Who and discuss what it means to be faithful 100%.   We will also read Oh the Places you will go and do a fun writing activity and craft to go along with it.  I have some fun activities planned for each story.    We will also discuss synonyms

Math:  

Counting money to equal up to $1.00, adding and subtracting.  We will be adding 9 to a number and review our flash fact cards.  We will begin our March math centers.  Today in computers the students practiced their math facts on math magician.  They can practice at home by going to the website below.

Religion:  

We will be discussing the miracles of Jesus.  Quiz over chapter 14-15 on Friday.

 

Science:  

Solid, Liquid and gasses.  After reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck, students will be making Oobleck using a solid and liquid.  Students will be making predictions.  We will also discuss how a gas is made when water is warmed.
