Look What’s Happening In Kindergarten

Valentine’s Day is just around the cornor.  We will exchange Valentines Thursday morning and have our Valentine Party Thursday afternoon from 1-2:30.  It will be similar to our Christmas party.  The students will rotate through the classrooms and activities.  Kindergarten and Pre-K have joined together and are responsible for the party snack. All materials for the snack will be ready to go, all we need are parent volunteers to “man” the classroom as the other classes rotate through.  If you are interested, please let me know.  I have posted an updated class list on our web page and I will also be sending a paper copy home in the daily folder on Monday.  If your child will be giving out Valentine cards, please make sure there is a card for all.  Please have Valentine cards to school by Wednesday.  Also we will be making our Valentine mailboxes in class this week.  Please send in an empty cereal or shoe box by Tuesday February 12th.   If anyone has food ads from the paper laying around we need them for a science activity later in the week.  Please send them in with your child.  Thanks!

Remember, there is no school this Friday February 15 and Monday February 18.  Also, the Pre-K and kindergarten will not have school on Friday February 22nd due to screening of incoming students for the 2013-2014 school year.  Homework will be due this Thursday.

MATH – This week we will identify, order and write numbers up to 30, identify a sphere, order objects by size, sort coins, and  identify a quarter and a dollar.

RELIGION – We will read the third and final part of Joseph  and His Coat of Many Colors.  We will discuss how God wants us, like Joseph, to forgive those who have hurt us.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will finish our unit on economics.  We will learn that people exchange money for goods and recognize that people save money.

SCIENCE – This week we will continue our study of the food pyramid.  We will focus on the vegetable group and the fruit group.  We will sample foods from both groups.  The students will also begin creating their our food pyramids.  Food ads are needed for this project.  If you have any food ads from the paper, please send them in with your child.

READING – This week we will decode new sight words, segment syllables, attach the /k/ sound to the letter Kk and the shrot /e/ sound to the letter Ee, practice sound-by-sound blending, read a decodable, review nouns, order words and position words, put events in sequence order.  Our story selection for the week is “Swimmy”.  The students will be introduced to new vocabulary words and use the comprehension strategies visualizing and predicting.
