News for the week of January 9 through 15, 2013

Letter from the Principal:

Dear SJV Families,

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and are enjoying a great start to the new year!  It has been wonderful to see the students and teachers jump right back into learning in the last week.

There are many exciting things in the works for January!  We are proud and excited to be featured on Channel 4’s “40 Schools in 40 Days” this year!  Paul Heggen will visit us this Friday, and you will be able to see our school and students on the morning news next Monday.

Plans are also underway for celebrating Catholic Schools Week!  Look for an itinerary of events to come home in next week’s Wednesday folder, and an invitation and RSVP for Grandparents Day, in addition to Chili Cook-Off information in this week’s folder.

Also, as hard as it may be to believe, it is time to thing about the 2013-2014 school year!  Re-registration cards for next year are included in your Wednesday folder this week as well.

Have a blessed week ahead!

Jennifer McCormick

SCHOOL SAFETY WEEK::  During our January faculty meeting, the faculty reviewed all school safety procedures, as we do at the beginning of each year, and decided to dedicate this week as “School Safety Week,” to remind all students of the safety procedures we typically go over the first week of school, and practice in our monthly drills.  We also are having additional fire, tornado, and lockdown drills this week to help with the review lessons the teachers are going over.  We will continue to have our monthly drills, but thought this would be a great time for a refresher course for everyone.

GRANDPARENTS DAY:  Grandparents Day is less than a month away!  As we close out Catholic Schools Week on February 1, we invite all grandparents to join us for Mass and other activities from8:00 am – 11:30 am.  Please see your child’s Wednesday folder for more information, and an RSVP form, which is due no later than January 18.

VISION & HEARING SCREENING:  We will be conducting optional vision and hearing screenings next Wednesday, January 16 and Thursday, January 17.  The screenings are not administered without your permission.  A permission slip is attached to this week’s newsletter, and is also available in the office for your convenience.

TREASURE BOX ITEMS:  Are you cleaning out the toybox or playroom after a long two week Christmas break?  Does your child have way too many Happy Meal toys?  We are looking for small toys and other such items in good condition for a Catholic Schools Week activity.  Items may be sent to the office by Friday, January 25.

PARENT REMINDER   So that we can keep the spread of colds, the flu, and other contagious illnesses to a minimum, we want to remind everyone to adhere to our school policy of children being “symptom free” (i.e. fevers, vomiting, diarrhea) for 24 hours prior to returning to school.  While an absence note from a parent is required for all 1 or 2 day absences, children who miss three days or more must have a doctor’s release prior to returning to school.  Also, please keep in mind that children who are absent from school the day of or day prior to a school event (afterschool program, athletic event, etc.) cannot participate in that event.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in enforcing this school policy.  If we all work together we can keep illness down to a minimum!

WAY TO GO WILDCATS!  If you know of any current or past Wildcat that deserves recognition on a great accomplishment please let us know by 2 pm Monday so we can include the info in our newsletter.
