News for the week of December 12 – January 8, 2013

Letter from the Principal:

Dear SJV families,

As we prepare to go on our Christmas break from school, to spend time with family, travel, or just relax and unwind at home, I pray that even though our SJV family will not be together, that we will all be filled with the spirit of the season, keeping each other in thought and prayer.

O God,
bless our family
and all its members and friends;
bind us together by your love.
Give us kindness and patience
to support each other;
and wisdom in all we do.
Let the gift of your peace
come into our hearts
and remain with us.
May we rejoice in your blessings
for all our days.

I wish you all many blessings as you enjoy the hope and peace of the Christmas season.  Thank you for your love and dedication to our SJV family!

God bless,

Jennifer McCormick

THE SJV CHRISTMAS PROGRAM is Tuesday, December 18th at 6 p.m. in the church.  Come join us as our school celebrates this joyous season!  Students should meet their teachers in the church at 5:45 pm that evening.  All students, unless given special directions by their homeroom teacher for costumes, should wear their “Christmas Best.”

looking for some easy volunteer hours?  If you are finding it hard to find ways to get to the school and volunteer here is a fast and easy way to earn hours.  We are hosting a basketball tournament on December 15th and we are in need of items to sell in the concession stand.  We need bottled water, small purple, blue, red, and orange Gatorade, canned Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, and Dr. Pepper, cereal and granola bars, popping corn for popcorn machine, popcorn oil, individual bagged chips, and full size candy bars.    If you wish to donate items, please contact the school office so we can keep track of items still needed prior to the 15th.

EARLY DISMISSAL Wednesday, December 19   Wednesday, December 19 is the last day prior to our Christmas break and will be an 11:30 am dismissal.  No aftercare is provided on this day.  This is an important day for students who must make up missed work as it is the last day of Second Quarter.  Students will also participate in Advent Parties at the end of the day.

IS YOUR CHILD MISSING SOMETHING??  The Lost and Found in the office is overflowing with clothing items!  If your child is missing something, please stop by the office and check to see if it is here.  Uniforms are expensive, and we would hate for anyone to lose something valuable!  Any items not claimed by the end of the school day on December 19 will be donated.

40 Schools in 40 days  SJV is excited to announce that we will take part in “40 Schools in 40 Days” with Meteorologist Paul Heggen from WSMV Channel 4 on Monday, January 7.  Mr. Heggen will give a presentation, followed by a brief Q&A session from our students.  We are excited to show Mr. Heggen what a great SJV family we have.  Our Student Council Officers and Representatives will welcome him to the school upon his arrival, and all students are attending the presentation.  We ask that all students wear their Mass uniforms on this special day.

PARENT REMINDER As I am sure you have all seen on the news, the cold and flu season is already upon us.  So that we can keep the spread of colds, the flu, and other contagious illnesses to a minimum, we want to remind everyone to adhere to our school policy of children being “symptom free” (i.e. fevers, vomiting, diarrhea) for 24 hours prior to returning to school.  Additionally, children missing three days or more must have a doctor’s release prior to returning to school and for absences to be considered “excused”  Also, please keep in mind that children who are absent from school the day of or day prior to a school event (afterschool program, athletic event, etc.) cannot participate in that event.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in enforcing this school policy.  If we all work together we can keep illness down to a minimum!
