Grade 3: This Week at a Glance – October 1 – 5

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5th is an Early Dismissal Day!

RELIGION: . Our next Religion test will cover Chapter 3. Please use the study guide that was sent home last week to help your child study. The test will be on Tuesday, October 2.

READING:  This week we will read the story  Wold Island. The test on this story, and the spelling words, will be on Friday, October 5. I will send home the essay question so the students can practice their writing skills prior to the test. This will be the last time that the essay question will be sent home. After this week, the students will be responsible for carefully reading the prompt, organizing a response, and writing their answer in paragraph form.

SPELLING:  This week’s spelling words include words with the long u sound and homophones. Please check your child’s agenda for the list of words.  Spellingcity assignments must be completed by Friday, October 5th. Students who do not finish the assignments will have a ten point deduction taken from their test score.

GRAMMAR: This week the students will learn several irregular plurals. They will also learn to capitalize proper nouns. The students will have a weekly grammar assessment on Wednesday. The weekly grammar assessments cover material the students practice daily in class. Study guides are not available for these tests. Since the students can’t really study for the tests, they are generally not listed in the agenda.

MATH: This week we will work on adding several addends. The students will learn to combine numbers that add to ten and to use doubles effectively.  The students will practice adding numbers with up to four digits. They will continue to practice rounding numbers and using money.  This week the students will have the opportunity to solve several challenge problems. Weekly math assessments are given on Wednesdays.

SCIENCE: This week we will study the life cycle of a frog and learn about amphibians and reptiles. We will also learn about endangered animals and extinction. Our unit test will be on Thursday, October 4.  Please encourage your child to use spellingcity.com and other methods to learn the vocabulary. The students should study after each lesson so they will be prepared for the chapter test.  A study guide will be sent home by Tuesday.

SOCIAL STUDIES: The students will have an test on the South Eastern Region of the United States on Tuesday. A list of the states will be provided. The students will need to fill in a blank map with the names. They will also match the state abbreviation to the state. The students should be able to answer all of the questions listed at the bottom of their map. They should also be able to apply previous map skills to answer questions about directions.

TECHNOLOGY: This week the students will work on locating information and writing text into a Microsoft Word document. The students will also learn the correct hand position to use for typing.

LIBRARY: The students are required to check out one Book Adventure book each week. The students should read this book and take the Book Adventure test on it prior to the next library class. It is essential for third grade students to read every night. We will continue to read the story Abel’s Island in class this week. The listening tests will count as a classroom grade in reading.
