Grade 3: This Week at a Glance – Sept. 4 – 7

RELIGION: This week we will be studying Chapter 3 in our religion book.  The students should begin to work on their bible character project. The students will begin teaching lessons on the Old Testament characters beginning September 10. Be creative, and have a great time!

READING: Our reading selection this week is Beauty and the Beast. We will use the information in the story to explore true friendship and to learn not to “judge a book by its cover”.  Our reading and spelling test will be on Friday.

GRAMMAR: The students will continue to learn about sentence structure. They will also learn dictionary skills. The students will take the weekly grammar test on Thursday.

SPELLING: This week’s spelling words contain the long a or long e sounds. The students will learn the letter combinations that make these sounds. Please check your child’s agenda for the spelling list  (or see below). assignments are due on Friday. Failure to complete spellingcity assignments will result in a grade reduction on Friday’s test.

MATH: Each student was given a small baggie with “money” to help him/her learn to determine the value of a variety of coins and to determine change. This bag should be kept in the math folder in your child’s binder. Students may use the coins to complete homework assignments and to practice counting money. We will use the coins in class to solve word problems and to determine the lowest number of coins needed to make a particular value. The students will also round numbers to the nearest 10 and the nearest 100. We will continue to learn fractions. The next test will be on Wednesday. Please remind your child to read the directions carefully and to complete all parts of the test.

SCIENCE: Our first science test will be on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. The students will complete a study guide on Tuesday. They should study their notes, the vocabulary words, and the main concepts for each lesson. The vocabulary words are listed under “Types of Plants” under the science tab on Students should focus on playing the vocabulary games for these words.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We will finish our unit on the United States this week. Please check your child’s agenda daily for assignments and test information.

LIBRARY: Please have your child take the BA test on his/her library book. Students will not be able to check out a new book unless they took the test on the book they have. I will be taking a grade based on the BA scores on Friday, September 14. Students should be reading books at a third grade reading level or higher.

CLASSROOM BOOK: I am currently reading Judy Blume’s Iggie’s House aloud to the students. When Winnie’s friend, Iggie, moves away, the first black family moves into the neighborhood. Winnie immediately becomes friends with the children, but how do the adults act? We will use the story to discuss history, friendship, and discrimination, and to examine the Church’s teachings on human dignity. We will also use the story to show that children can make a difference, make good choices, and bear witness to God in their lives. Iggie’s’House is a BA book, so the students will all take the BA test. This test will count as a listening grade and will be recorded as a classroom grade in reading.
