News for the week of August 29- September 4, 2012

Letter from the Principal:

Dear families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday.  Many thanks to those of you who were able to attend, volunteer, or both!  It is because of the dedicated families that we have here at SJV that we are able to enjoy such wonderful events like this!

Don’t forget to join us this evening for Back to School Night.  This is a great opportunity to talk with the teachers and get to know SJV even better.

It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly September and we are almost finished with the third week of school.  I know I speak for everyone here when I tell you what a blessing it has been getting to know all of our wonderful students.  I hope you receive daily blessings as well from being part of the SJV family.

Please enjoy a safe and relaxing Labor Day Weekend!

God bless,

Jennifer McCormick

NEWS FOR THE WEEK:

SJV BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT THIS WEDNESDAY beginning at 6:00 pm in the gym.  We will meet briefly for a few announcements and welcoming remarks, and then parents will be invited to visit the classrooms and talk with teachers.  This is your chance to see if your child’s desk, cubby, or locker is as messy as his/her room!  Seriously though, it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet our faculty, staff, and other parents.  We hope to see you there!

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE EVALUATIONS Ms. Jennifer Dotson, with Sumner County Schools, will be at our school on Tuesdays and Thursdays again this year to provide speech and language services to qualified students.  If you are a resident of Sumner County and think your child is in need of this service and would like her to provide an evaluation please contact your child’s teacher in writing requesting that an evaluation be done during the school day.   If you have any questions about this service, please contact the school office at 230-7048.

PTP NEWS:

THANK YOU to the 2nd and 8th grade PTP Representatives Kelly Bilbrey and Evie Clausen and all of the many volunteers who worked so hard to make this year’s spaghetti dinner a huge success!  A lot of fun…..and meatballs… were had by all!

THE FUN RUN KICK OFF ASSEMBLY was this afternoon.  Please ask your child about information that was sent home today.  This is by far our biggest PTP fundraiser of the year, and it would be wonderful to have 100% participation!

The Fun Run is on Friday, September 14th at 12:45.  The race is sponsored by the 3rd and 4th grade classes every year.  Volunteers from 3rd and 4th grade, or any other interested parents will be needed to count laps, set up the race course, and cheer our runners on.    Contact Monica Krampotich at 210-7874 or Shannon Smith at 308-6501 and let them know what you can do to help!

BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION/LABELS COLLECTION IS THIS FRIDAY!   The first collection date of the school year for Boxtops for Education/Labels is Friday, August 30th.  Send your child’s Box tops and soup labels in to their homeroom teacher in a Ziplock bag with their name and grade written on it.  The child in each class with the most labels wins a sweet treat!

YOU CAN EARN EXTRA POINTS FOR OUR SCHOOL!  Each person to register RewardyourSchool.com with a Kroger Shoppers Card can win 5 extra points for our school and earn an entry into the 50,000 point give-a-way!

BACKGROUND CHECKS:  If you plan to volunteer with students present (i.e. in the classroom, on field trips, etc.) you must have a current background check on file in the office.  The deadline for submission of background check forms this year will be Friday, August 31.  Forms can be obtained in the office.

ARE YOU PLANNING ON VOLUNTEERING THIS YEAR AT SJV?  If you are and you have not already viewed the safe environment power point presentation on the Diocese of Nashville website then you will need to do so prior to your first time volunteering at the school, or at any event the children are present at.   You may watch this presentation at the school, or you can do it at home by following the link provided below.  Once you have viewed the program you will need to sign a release verifying the viewing of the presentation.  If you have already watched, and signed the agreement you will not be required to do so again, your signature form will be on file at the school.

If you have any questions, or are unsure to whether you have previously completed this requirement, please feel free to contact Christi Kemp at 230-7048.

SCHOOL-REACH  ANNOUNCEMENT SYSTEM  SJV will be using the School Reach announcement system this year to inform parents of upcoming events, changes in school scheduling, etc. We are very excited about this program and the ease of use and we hope you will be too.   School Reach will be sending information directly to our parents sometime in mid September about programs and apps they have available to make their system user friendly.

MORNING DROP OFF:  In order to keep all of our students safe, please do not go around the cones and pass stopped cars on the left side of the drop off lane.  Many children exit their cars on the left side, and we do not want anyone injured.  We do our best to quickly assist children in exiting their vehicles.  Also, if you need to talk with a teacher, please send a note, call, or email to set up an appointment.  While you may have time to talk with a teacher, the person behind you in the line may have to get to work or take another child to school.  We appreciate your consideration with both of these matters.

DISMISSAL UPDATENow that North Water is accessible again, please make sure to turn right toward North Water to exit the parking lot dismissal line if you are in the right lane, and turn left toward Boyer Avenue to exit the parking lot dismissal line if you are in the left lane.  This will keep the dismissal line flowing safely and swiftly for everyone.

ROOM PARENTS:  This year we will continue the tradition of “school-wide” parties that we began last year.  We will have four parties again this year (Fall Party on October 31, Christmas Party on December 19, Valentine’s Party on February 14, and End of the Year Party on May 29).  The only change is organizational.  Last year, Mrs. Gardner generously organized all four parties herself.  This year, we are asking for a room parent (or pair of co-room parents) to help.  For each party the classes will be assigned to one aspect of the party (snacks, drinks, games, décor, etc.) and will plan that aspect.  The room parent(s) will organize this effort.  With everyone sharing the responsibilities, we hope that this can continue to be a fun endeavor for students, families, faculty and staff.  That said, we are still in need of room parent for 8th grade.  Please let Mrs. Raybourne know if you can help this year.

WAY TO GO WILDCATS!  Several SJV students participated in the Fall Elementary School Swim Meet at the Jimmy Floyd Family Center in Lebanon on Saturday, August 25.  Students representing 28 area schools participated and St. John Vianney placed FIRST with a combined team score of 335!    Our SJV Swimmers were Andrew Golden, Henry Hutt, Ava Jilek, Ethan Jilek, Korbin Smith, and Shealee Smith.
