Grade 3: This Week at a Glance August 13 – 17


RELIGION:   This week we will learn who Jesus is and how to reflect His love. We will learn God’s perfections and identify our gifts and talents. We will use Jesus’s example to examine how to treat others. We will work on team building skills.

READING:  Our reading selection this week is Rugby and Rosie. The students will learn several comprehension strategies. We will identify different story elements, determine the author’s purpose, and learn test taking strategies.

GRAMMAR:  The students will learn to recognize fragments and fix them so they are complete sentences. We will identify the four types of sentences and learn the correct punctuation for each.

SPELLING: The students will take five 20 word quizzes on the 100 most common words that they studied over the summer. The quizzes will be averaged and count as one classwork grade. These words will be added to our word wall. Once the words are on the wall, the students are responsible to use and spell them correctly.

This week’s spelling words contain long vowel sounds. Please check your child’s agenda for the spelling list. assignments are due on Friday. The students will have a spelling test on Friday.

MATH:  This week the students will learn how to tell time to the hour,  determine elapsed time, make and interpret graphs, and measure to the nearest inch.

SCIENCE: Our first science unit is on plants. The students will complete several investigations, learn strategies for reading non-fiction, practice taking notes, and learn how to keep a science journal.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We will begin the year by learning about the United States. This week, we will combine social studies with our technology class. The students will look up patriotic symbols and design pages for a team book.

TECHNOLOGY:  The students will learn the terms Internet, web browser, and website. We will discuss proper behavior and expectations while using the computer lab. In addition to this, the students will begin to design pages for our social studies book.

LIBRARY:  The students will learn procedures for using the library. They will identify the  left to right, top to bottom shelf arrangement and will examine the information on the spine of the books. The students will learn how to keep materials in order while browsing.

Students will be able to check out two books each week. One of the books must be a Book Adventure book. Students need to pass the Book Adventure test before checking out another book. Please remember that reading is extremely important. Book Adventure contests will be set up to help motivate the students to read. Watch for more information in your Wednesday folder.
