Grade 3: This Week at a Glance – April 2 – 6

This week is extremely important in the life of the Church; I invite each of you to participate as fully as possible. On Thursday, April 5 there will be no homework so that your family may attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. I encourage everyone to attend the Good Friday Liturgy if possible. The students have been learning about sacramentals, the Passover, and the Way of the Cross. Participating in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Good Friday Liturgy, the Stations of the Cross and the Easter Vigil is an extraordinary gift that we can give our children.

Holy Week schedule at St. John Vianney:

Holy Week Schedule
Wednesday, April 4 – Mass at the Cathedral 6:00 p.m.
Holy Thursday, April 5 – Mass of the Lord’s Supper 6:30 p.m.
Good Friday, April 6 – Good Friday Liturgy 3:00 p.m. & Stations of the Cross 6:30 p.m.
Holy Saturday, April 7 – Easter Vigil Mass 8:00 p.m

Literature:  We are reading the story “Days of Digging” by Holly Cefrey again.  The students had an extremely difficult time with the assignments and test on this story. We are going to take the time to work on the assignments, review the test, and work on using information we have to answer higher level thinking questions.

Grammar:  We will review the eight parts of speech and identify them in writing. We will focus on prepositions, recognizing prepositional phrases,  finding the object of a preposition, and identifying what the prepositional phrase modifies. We will also use our knowledge of prepositional phrases to help us identify the simple subject and simple predicate in a sentence.

Science: We will begin our study of weather this week. The students will learn to identify clouds, use a weather map, demonstrate ways to stay safe in storms, and explore the field of meteorology.

Social Studies:  The students will have a test on Tuesday on Chapter 9, Lessons 1 and 2. This test was postponed from last week.

Math:  Students need to know their multiplication facts. The students will practice computation skills daily. This week the students will review the terms slide, rotate, and flip, will measure objects using millimeters, and will learn about geometric shapes.  Assessment 22 will be administered on Wednesday.

Spelling: Due to the short week, there will not be a spelling test this week; however, we will practice spelling and determine our winners for the Team Third Grade Spelling Bee. Please check your child’s homework and have him/her fix spelling errors.
