Happy Valentine’s Day

Saint Valentine Day parties will be help on Tuesday, February 14. Your child is welcome to bring in valentines for the students in our class. Please check your email for the list of names.

Religion: Chapter 20: This week we continue to talk about the Mass. We will study Old Testament sacrifices and then learn that Jesus is the Perfect Sacrifice. We will also learn to try to find God in all situations; and when we can’t, how to offer up our suffering to Him. We will learn how to make Mass more meaningful and how to participate more fully in Mass. In addition to this, we will learn the about how sacramentals help us to learn about, focus on, and experience Christ.

Social Studies: Take home kits will come home this week!

Grammar:   We will finish our persuasive writing. We will also learn about Greek and Latin roots, synonyms and antonyms, and test taking skills.

Multiplication: We will take our timed test on the nine facts on Tuesday. This week the students will learn the six facts. Daily timed practice tests will be sent home on Monday. Please have your child work on speed and accuracy at home. The completed timed-test page is due the following Monday. Please record the time for each column.

Math:  We will continue to work on solving word problems, we will also measure to the nearest fourth inch.  We will also learn about parallel lines, intersecting lines, rays, line segments, and points. I will be working with small groups of students to teach them how to multiply  2 and 3 digit numbers by a one digit number. I cannot stress the importance of knowing the multiplication facts enough. Math Assessment 19 will be given on Wednesday.

Science: We will finish Unit C Chapter 3 and will begin our next Unit of study. The students will learn about renewable and nonrenewable resources and will learn how to care for our Earth.

Reading and Spelling:  This week we will read “Journey to the Moon”.  The students will not have an assessment on this story. The information will be used to prepare for our upcoming science project.

Spelling:  Test Thursday.  Due to the short week, Spellingcity.com assignments are due Thursday morning. This is homework. Students who do not complete the activities will have points deducted from their test grade. If your child is not able to complete the assignments at home, please send me a note and I will make sure your child is able to use the school computers to complete the assignments. I must receive the note on or before Wednesday.

Book Adventure:  The new contest has begun!  As always, students earning 500 points or more will enjoy a PJ and popcorn party. The top three readers will also receive individual prizes. The contest name is “We Need to Read” and the code is WD311. Please remember that meeting reading goals is a test grade for this quarter.

We will continue to take comprehension quizzes. These quizzes are on passages that the students have not seen before, but are written at a third grade level. The quizzes are being recorded as classwork grades and will count as 30% of your child’s grade. Please encourage your child to read carefully, look back in the story for answers, eliminate erroneous answers, and to read all of the choices before selecting an answer.
